S. pneumoniae is the most common bacterial cause of pneumonia in childhood.
Viruses are common causes of CAP in children under 5 years old.
Patients with negative cultures who are started on empiric broad spectrum IV treatment may be deescalated to oral amoxicillin or amoxicillin-clavulanate upon improvement.
