Non-Purulent SSTIs

Acute onset of infection of dermis and subcutaneous tissue characterized by poorly circumscribed bright red erythema, edema, warmth and tenderness.

Acute onset infection of skin occurring most commonly on the face and lower extremities.

Erysipelas is distinguished from cellulitis by more superficial cutaneous involvement, prominent lymphatic involvement, higher risk of recurrence, sharply delineated margins, location and by pathogen (most commonly S. pyogenes).

Limb- and life-threatening mono- (Group A beta-hemolytic Streptococcus) or
polymicrobial infection with resultant tissue necrosis of skin, subcutaneous tissue, fascia and muscle.
