Patients do not need both IV Quinine and IV Artesunate unless resistance is suspected
If Artesunate only becomes available after Quinine has been started, discontinue Quinine once first dose of Artesunate is given
Artesunate
2.4 mg/kg IV or IM given:
On admission, 12 hours, and 24 hours post admission, THEN
Once a day
Note: Children <20kg should receive 3 mg/kg
OR
Quinine Sulfate
20 mg salt/kg IV or divided IM injection on admission, THEN
10 mg/kg every 8 hours
Note: Infusion rate should not exceed 5 mg salt/kg/hour
Artemether
3.2 mg/kg IM on admission, THEN
1.6 mg/kg/day
Note: Should only be used if no other alternatives available
