Initial Treatment

Notes

Patients do not need both IV Quinine and IV Artesunate unless resistance is suspected

If Artesunate only becomes available after Quinine has been started, discontinue Quinine once first dose of Artesunate is given

Treatment

Artesunate

2.4 mg/kg IV or IM given:

  • On admission, 12 hours, and 24 hours post admission, THEN

  • Once a day

Note: Children <20kg should receive 3 mg/kg

OR

Quinine Sulfate

  • 20 mg salt/kg IV or divided IM injection on admission, THEN

  • 10 mg/kg every 8 hours

Note: Infusion rate should not exceed 5 mg salt/kg/hour

OR

Artemether

  • 3.2 mg/kg IM on admission, THEN

  • 1.6 mg/kg/day

Note: Should only be used if no other alternatives available
