Aerobic Culture
Single representative fluid collection (not bone) from bone aspirate or debridement sent in syringe or sterile container to microbiology.
Minimum quantity: 0.5ml
Anaerobic, Fungal and Acid Fast Bacteria Cultures
Bone site fluid collection (not bone) sent in sterile specimen cup
Minimum quantity: 1.5 mL
Lab technician will plate anaerobic and fungal samples on 3 plates each, requiring a total of 0.5 mL
AFB cultures are sent to ARUP with a minimum volume of 1.0 mL.
If less than 2.5 mL are obtained, prioritization will be necessary. Order of priority: Aerobic>Anaerobic>Fungal>AFB
Histopathology
Separate aspirate or bone material sent in formalin
No frozen section or touch prep needed for routine cases.
Minimum quantity: 1 mL
