GBS or Streptococcus agalactiae (Adults)

Duration of Therapy

14-21 Days

Regimen of Choice

Penicillin-G, 4 million units IV q4h

OR

Ampicillin 2g IV q4h

Beta-lactam Allergy

Ceftriaxone 2g IV q12h

OR

Cefotaxime 2g every 4 to 6 hours

Penicillin/Beta-lactam Allergy

If the patient has a true history of IgE mediated penicillin or beta-lactam allergy, the risks versus benefit of empiric treatment of suspected meningitis with appropriate antimicrobials should be discussed.
