Antimicrobials
Once there is suspicion of acute bacterial meningitis, the following must be done:
1. Two sets of blood cultures.
2. A CT scan if indicated.
3. A lumbar puncture (LP).
If there are delays in performing the CT scan or LP, then the patient should receive empiric antimicrobial therapy immediately.
Diagnostic Notes
The administration of dexamethasone must not delay the administration of the first dose of antibiotics.
