Laparoscopic Procedure

For high-risk patients only

  • Age over 70

  • Acute cholecystitis

  • Non-functioning gallbladder

  • Obstructive jaundice or common bile duct stones)

  • Other factors that may confer a higher risk include: diabetes, pregnancy, immunosuppression, insertion of prosthetic device, episode of colic within 30 days before procedure, repeat intervention in less than one month for noninfectious complication, long procedure duration, intraoperative gallbladder rupture, bile spillage, conversion from laparoscopic to open cholecystectomy

Regimen of Choice

Cefazolin 2 g IV

β-lactam Allergy

PLUS

Not necessary unless significant blood loss as this is q24h dosage regimen

Post Op Antibiotics

None unless one of the following:

  • Acute cholecystitis

  • Gangrene

  • Perforated gallbladder
