Cellulitis with Abscess

Notes

Staphylococcus aureus is the most likely pathogen

Drain the pus – send large volume tissue or fluid (not swab) for culture.

A simple abscess or furuncle may be treated with incision and drainage only, without antibiotics.

Hot compresses may encourage drainage.

Antimicrobials Recommended If Any Of:

Surrounding cellulitis

SIRS = Two of:

  1. HR>90,
  2. RR >20 or PaCO2 <32,
  3. Temp >38 or <36,
  4. WBC >12 or <4

Immunosuppression, DM

Lack of response to drainage alone

Unable to completely drain
