Bite Wound

Note

All questions regarding whether rabies prophylaxis is required should be deferred to the regional Medical Officer of Health.

All bite wounds are reportable to the Provincial Medical Officer of Health.

Most Likely Pathogens

The host’s skin flora (i.e. consider MRSA if risk factors present)

The biting species mouth flora, including notable pathogens:
Cat/Dog: Pasteurella spp., Capnocytophaga spp. (can cause sepsis in asplenia)
Human: Eikenella corrodes
These organisms produce beta-lactamases and are NOT susceptible to first generation cephalosporins.

Notify the Medical Officer of Health for all animal bites.
