Key Messages
Non-purulent cellulitis is mostly caused by beta-hemolytic streptococci (e.g. Group A streptococci) or MSSA.
Purulent cellulitis can be caused by MRSA. Specimens should be obtained for microbiologic diagnosis.
Colonization with MRSA does NOT justify anti-MRSA treatment.
An important aspect of treatment is to keep the affected extremity elevated.
Improvement of erythema can take days, especially in patients with lymphedema.
5 to 10 days of therapy is often adequate for the SSTI listed below.
Consider tetanus immunity status.
