Prevnar 13

Pneumococcal Conjugate Vaccine (PCV)

Prevnar 13

Antigens:

  • Polysaccharide antigen is covalently conjugated to a carrier protein

  • 13 strains, 12 of which are also contained in the Pneumovax 23 vaccine

  • Due to pneumococcal vaccination in children and herd immunity, only about 30% of all pneumococcal disease is caused by strains contained in Prevnar 13

Immunogenicity

Stronger initial immune response then Pneumovax 23
Higher B and T cell response
Antibody differences between the two vaccines are minimal long-term
Very useful for immunologic priming - strongly stimulating B cells causing an enhanced response to subsequent Pneumovax 23

Dosing

  • 1 dose IM

  • Needs to be spaced at least 1 year after Pneumovax hence immunizing with Prevnar first is preferred

  • Once Prevnar is given, Pneumovax can follow 8 weeks later

  • One time adult dose

Cost

Provincially funded only for those with HIV and transplant patients

Available at pharmacies and public health units for all others at a cost of $125

Covered if ordered and administered in a hospitalized setting at Island Health
