Clinical Features

Classical Triad of Symptoms

  1. Signs of haematuria
  2. Fluid overload
  3. Renal dysfunction

Characteristics

APSGN may occur at any age, but it is most common between 2-15 years of age (median 6-8)

APSGN typically follows either pharyngeal (1-2 weeks later) or, less commonly, skin infections (3-6 weeks later) with group A Streptococcus (GAS)

Volume overload occurs in up to 2/3 of patients and may be enough to cause congestive heart failure and pulmonary edema

  • Severity may not correlate with degree of volume overload

  • Hypertensive encephalopathy (seizure, confusion, and coma) is the presenting features in 5% of cases
