If an aminoglycoside is required based on antibiotic sensitivity results, amikacin is preferred over gentamicin because its nephrotoxic potential may be lower

Neonates (Until Culture Results are Available)

Gentamicin IV

AND

Penicillin IV

Outside the Neonatal Period (To Start)

Ceftriaxone IV

Should be avoided in the first two weeks of life as it may affect bilirubin transport in the liver
