Liver Abscess

Usual Organisms

Escherichia coli, Klebsiella spp., Streptococcus anginosus group, Enterococcus spp., other Viridans group Streptococci, Bacteroides spp and other anaerobes.

Management

Consult Interventional Radiology or General Surgery for drainage.
Send specimens for Gram stain and culture.

Peripheral blood cultures x 2 sets.

Infectious Disease consultation is strongly recommended.

Empiric Antimicrobial Therapy

Ceftriaxone 1g IV 24h

AND

Metronidazole 500mg PO/IV q12h

Reassess Therapy on Day 3
