Aeromonas spp. is found in aquatic environments including rivers, lakes, ponds, seawater, drinking water, groundwater, wastewater, sewage and part of the normal flora of animals including leeches.
The three most common infections caused by Aeromonas species are gastrointestinal infection, skin and soft-tissue infection and bacteremia in immunocompromised individuals.
Wound infections typically result from trauma in a water setting and can range from relatively uncomplicated cellulitis to serious subcutaneous infections such as necrotizing fasciitis.
