Uncomplicated or with an effusion/empyema*, being cared for in a general inpatient unit
*Culture of pleural fluid strongly recommended
During annual influenza epidemics, consider concurrent testing for influenza and, if clinically indicated, treatment with Oseltamivir
Droplet / Contact Precautions
If viral etiology ruled out and clinical symptoms indicate bacterial cause and patient improving then precautions may be discontinued after 24 hours of antimicrobial therapy

Ampicillin IV

If clinically compatible with concurrent or recent influenza
Oseltamivir
AND
CeFAZolin IV
7 - 10 days including oral conversion when afebrile for 24 - 48 hours
