The possibility of infection should be evaluated on an individual bases as prophylaxis is not necessarily required if microaspiration is only suspected due to a seizure or poison ingestion, or if there are no significant changes in respiratory status.
Routine Practices
Oral anaerobes
Streptococcus sp.
Penicillin IV
OR
Ampicillin IV
If multiple prior antimicrobials or known to be colonized with Enterobacteriaceae or Pseudomonas
CefTRIAXone IV
Piperacillin - Tazobactam IV
3 - 5 days
