Aerobic, gram positive cocci in clusters, coagulase-negative

Epidemiology

Ubiquitous - skin organism

Associated syndromes

  • Most commonly a skin contaminant/colonizer

    • The most common contaminant of blood cultures
  • This may be a real pathogen particularly in nosocomial setting, especially since CoNS can cause biofilms

  • It is a major cause of all foreign body infections

  • Important disease manifestations include infections of prosthetic materials including:

    • Shunt infections
    • Vascular catheter infections
    • Prosthetic joints etc.

Additional Information

  • Staphylococcus lugdenensis acts more like S. aureus and is more virulent than other CoNS - should be respected as a pathogen

  • Staphylococcus saphrophyticus causes UTI in young, sexually active females
