General Information

Pathogen information

Motile, comma-shaped, gram-negative bacilli

Epidemiology

  • The gastrointestinal tracts of domestic and wild birds and animals are reservoirs

  • Transmission occurs by ingestion of contaminated food or water or by direct contact with fecal material from infected animals or people

Associated syndromes

  • Diarrheal illness

  • Immunoreactive complications can occur like Guillain-Barre Syndrome, reactive arthritis, myocarditis, pericarditis, and erythema nodosum during convalescence

  • Pseudo-appendicitis

Additional Information

  • Treatment can shorten the duration of illness (usually only by 1 day) and excretion of susceptible organisms and prevent relapse when given early in gastrointestinal tract infection

  • Recommend treatment for patients with prolonged or severe disease and immunocompromised patients

  • Increasing resistance to fluoroquinolone.
