First Line Treatment

Ampicillin or Penicillin G
*add gentamicin until infection under control, then discontinue

Alternate Treatment

Ceftriaxone
Amoxicillin

*if allergic to first line treatment
Vancomycin

Gram positive cocci in chains, beta-hemolytic

Associated syndromes

Major cause of focal infections in neonates and young infants, including bacteremia and meningitis

Precautions

  • Droplet precautions until 24 hours after appropriate antimicrobial therapy

Treatment notes

  • In meningitis, lumbar puncture should be repeated in 48-72 hours to determine sterility
