How is PCT Used?

Note

Current literature is limited to assessing antibiotic regimens in respiratory infections and sepsis

Respiratory Infections

In clinically stable patients, may aid in decision to initiate antibiotics

May be used to aid in decision to stop antibiotics

Sepsis

May be used to aid in decision to stop antibiotics

Do not withhold antibiotics from a patient with suspected severe sepsis or septic shock regardless of PCT level

Caveats

PCT can be used to assist clinicians in assessment but antibiotic therapy should not be based solely on PCT levels.

Always consider the patient’s clinical condition including but not limited to the patient scenario and comorbid conditions, site of infection, likelihood of bacterial infection, the severity of illness and any other pertinent clinical data

A negative PCT is not a rule out localized infection
