Fermenting gram negative rod, of the Enterobacteriaceae family
GI flora
In healthy hosts, can cause:
UTI
Nasty pneumonias (Friedlanders disease)
Liver abscesses
Nosocomial infection:
Pneumonia
Intra-abdominal and biliary infection
Prosthetic material and vascular catheter infection
May require contact precautions if highly resistant i.e. ESBL, carbapenem resistant.
Treatment of choice for serious infections with ESBL strains is a carbapenem.
