Treatment of choice for serious ESBL infections is carbapenems.
These organisms may be reported as susceptible to pip-tazo or cefepime, however outcomes in serious infections such as bacteremia are improved when a carbapenem is used.
Often resistant to fluoroquinolones, TMP-SMX, and aminoglycosides via other mechanisms but not always.
For UTI only - may be susceptible to nitrofurantoin or fosfomycin (use 3 doses not the single dose treatment).
