General Information

First Line Treatment

Penicillin, amoxicillin, cefazolin or cephalexin

Pathogen information

Gram positive cocci in chains, beta-hemolytic.

Epidemiology

Common inhabitants of human gastrointestinal tract and genitourinary tract.

Associated syndromes

Major cause of perinatal infections, including bacteremia, endometritis, chorioamnionitis.

UTI in pregnant women and systemic and focal infections in neonates and young infants.

Skin and skin structure infections, especially in diabetic patients.

Can also cause systemic infection in immunocompromised adults and those 65 years and older.

Additional Information

Routine susceptibility is not performed as organism is universally susceptible to beta-lactams
