Consider Treatment

For illness of less than 48h since onset, antiviral treatment may be considered but is not routinely required.

Other Notes for This Group

Although children less than 5 years of age are classified as high risk (and those less than 2 years old at highest risk), individuals who are otherwise healthy, whose influenza is mild and who do not require hospitalization do not routinely require antiviral therapy. For these children, treatment is optional (Option, Grade D evidence).

In children of any age with mild or uncomplicated illness, antiviral treatment is not routinely recommended and should not be used if symptoms have been present for
greater than 48h.
