Local Epidemiology

The prevalence of Borrelia burgdorferi (bacteria causing Lyme Disease) in local Ixodes scapularis (blacklegged tick) is now high enough that all of Nova Scotia is considered an at-risk area

Note: Prophylaxis after a blacklegged tick bite is usually not recommended but prophylaxis may be used if there was a tick bite in an area that was known to be at risk for Lyme disease, and if the tick was engorged and other defined criteria are met.
