Aerobic gram negative rod

Epidemiology

Humans/animals are the reservoir (i.e. reptiles - turtles/lizards, transovarial transmission in chickens -> eggs or "kissing" pet chickens.).

Fecal-oral transmission or ingestion of contaminated water/food

Associated syndromes

  • Food-borne illness

  • Infectious colitis

  • Bacteremia and endovascular infection

  • Intra-abdominal abscess

Additional Information

Generally a self-limited illness which should not be treated with antibiotics - treat if immunosuppressed/bacteremic, high fever, or hospitalized or infants less than 3 months of age.
