Impetigo

Note

Increased prevalence of community acquired MRSA. Attempt cultures if feasible.

Bacterial Pathogen

Group A Streptococcus (Streptococcus pyogenes)

Staphylococcus aureus

Duration of Therapy

7 days

First Line Therapy

Cephalexin 25-100 mg/kg per day divided qid

OR

Mupirocin (2%). Apply a small amount to the affected area 3 times a day.

Alternatives (in Order)

Amoxicillin/Clavulanic acid: 40-50 mg/kg per day divided tid

OR

Clindamycin 10-40 mg/kg per day divided tid-qid
