Encapsulated lancet-shaped gram positive diplococci

Epidemiology

Normal flora and important cause of invasive disease, often vaccine preventable

Associated syndromes

Community-acquired pneumonia, bacteremia, and meningitis

Many other syndromes possible but uncommon including endocarditis, MSK, etc

Additional Information

  • The PCV-13 vaccine against 13 strains of S. pneumoniae is available and offered as part of the routine childhood immunization schedule in Alberta at 2,4,12 months of age.

  • Invasive pneumococcal disease is a reportable disease

  • 16S testing may be available on CSF, please contact ID on call or microbiology on call for this test.
