Age ≤ 6 Months

Note

Treat mildly ill patients < 6 months of age as moderately or severely ill as described below

Workup

CXR (2 views)

CBC w/ differential

Consider

Blood culture

RVP if viral etiology suspected. May reduce overuse of abx.

Pertussis PCR if completely vaccinated or clinically suspected.

Treatment

Moderately Ill

  • Increased WOB (grunting, retracting, tachypnea)

  • Hypoxia (< 90% SpO₂ on room air)

Severely Ill

  • Concern for respiratory failure

  • Sepsis

  • Altered mental status
