Asymptomatic bacteriuria

Definition

Positive urine culture with no signs or symptoms of infection. Common in the elderly.

Note

Obtaining routine cultures in asymptomatic patients is not recommended

Initial Empiric Treatment

Remove the catheter

No treatment unless patient is:

  • Pregnant

  • About to undergo a urologic procedure

  • Post renal transplant

  • Neutropenic

Antibiotics do NOT decrease asymptomatic bacteriuria or prevent subsequent development of UTI
