Indications for Empiric Therapy

Indications

1. In setting of suspected sepsis:

  • Fever

  • Ill appearance

  • Markedly elevated inflammatory markers (CRP, ESR,WBC))

2. If no signs of sepsis, may hold antibiotics until after local tissue and/or bone culture obtained (i.e. surgical or IR aspiration or biopsy)

3. If surgery or IR sampling is refused or deferred after discussion with ID, orthopaedics and radiology
