Invasive disease sharply declined after Hib conjugate vaccine widely used, especially in children <5yrs old who were the main victims

Most invasive disease is now caused by non-typable strains

Isolation Precautions for serotype b (Hib)

  •  Droplet precautions until 24 hours after effective therapy IF presentation is meningitis, epiglottitis, invasive bacteremia, septic arthritis, osteomyelitis, pericarditis, cellulitis, or pneumonia in an infant or child

Invasive disease is notifiable, all serotypes, if <5 years of age - call Public Health ASAP
