A definitive diagnosis of catheter-related bloodstream infection (CRBSI) requires that:
The same organism grow from at least 1 peripheral culture and from a culture of the catheter tip OR
2 blood samples drawn (one from catheter hub and other from peripheral vein)
grow the same organism.
Growth of microbes from the catheter sample at least 2 hours before growth detected in the peripheral blood sample best defines CRBSI.
