1. Send paired blood cultures from each lumen of the IV catheter and 1 set from a peripheral vein. If peripheral blood cultures cannot be obtained, send at least 2 sets of cultures from different lumens of the catheter.
2. When a catheter is removed for suspected catheter-related bloodstream infection (CRBSI), send the catheter tip for culture ONLY IF it was removed with aseptic technique and semi-quantitative or quantitative culture techniques are available.
3. If catheter site exudate is present, swab drainage and send for culture.
