These guidelines were developed by the Eastern Health Antimicrobial Stewardship Program, in collaboration with multiple health care professionals. They represent consensus based on evidence-based guidelines for adult patients informed by local microbiology and susceptibility patterns. The purpose of these guidelines is to guide antimicrobial therapy, leading to optimum patient outcomes while minimizing the development of Antimicrobial Resistance.
These guidelines do not replace clinical judgment.
A thorough clinical assessment is required to identify factors which may necessitate alternative or additional therapy.
The Eastern Health Infectious Diseases service is available for inpatient consultation (paediatric and adult), outpatient consultation (paediatric and adult), telephone consultation, telehealth, and eConsult.
Microbiology also has a microbiologist
on-call (MOC) for inquiries related to specimen collection and processing, antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST) results/interpretation as well as specialized culture or testing requests.
