Diagnosis

Stool microscopy (if available) may detect E. histolytica, Giardia trophozoites

Perform stool microbiology if:

• There is blood and/or mucus in the stool

• The child is immunocompromised

Consider performing stool microbiology if:

• The child had recently been abroad, or

• The diarrhoea has not improved by day 7, or

• Uncertain about the diagnosis of gastroenteritis
