Coagulase-negative Staphylococci (CoNS)

Single positive blood cultures of CoNS should NOT be treated unless they are confirmed by follow-up cultures, the patient is immunocompromised and/or critically ill, OR the patient has implanted hardware such as prosthetic valves or a cardiac device (e.g. pacemaker). In these cases, treatment can be started but repeat cultures should be sent PRIOR to initiation of therapy to confirm the diagnosis.
