Staphylococcus aureus

General Susceptibility

MSSA

Anti-staphylococcal penicillins (i.e. cloxacillin) and cephalosporins (i.e. cefazolin) are optimal agents for intravenous therapy of MSSA infections.

Variable susceptibility to:

  •  TMP-SMX,

  •  Tetracyclines

  • Clindamycin

MRSA

Susceptible to:

  • Vancomycin

  • Daptomycin

  • Linezolid

Variably susceptible to:

  • TMP-SMX

  • Tetracyclines

  • Clindamycin

Rates of MSSA and MRSA resistance to clindamycin are high; clindamycin should NOT be used as empiric therapy for Staphylococcus aureus infections.
