General Susceptibility

While pan-susceptible E. coli strains remain, highly resistant strains such as ESBL producing organisms are increasingly prevalent.

"Pansusceptible" isolates are sensitive to:

  •  Ampicillin

  •  Cephalosporins including first generation cephalosporins

  •  TMP-SMX

  • Fluoroquinolones

  • Piperacillin-tazobactam

In cases of infections due to ESBL producing organisms, carbapenems may be preferred.

Fosfomycin and nitrofurantoin should be used for cystitis only.
