Gram positive cocci in chains, facultatively anaerobic, variable hemolysis.
Smells like butterscotch.
Normal oral/GI flora.
Consists of Strep. anginosus, Strep. intermedius, and Strep. constellatus.
Used to be called Strep. milleri group.
Abscesses - intra-abdominal, hepatic, cerebral, empyema
Bacteremia
Rarely endocarditis
When these organisms grow in blood culture, look for the abscess.
Generally abscesses need surgical drainage depending on size/location.
